So studios cannot use it if they have more than k revenue… So for them, the price of Houdini actually is 7k or 5k yearly rental… which is 2 and a half times more than 3ds max… I agree that Autodesk should make some kind of Indie offer but for studios, Houdini is actually soooo much more expensive….
Prices are reduced for smaller companies and Indies. With Houdini, you can also buy permanent licenses that never expire and keep them current with maintenance contracts which in the long-run saves money over renting. You guys using Fx when you talk about features. Comparing the prices of Houdini and Max maybe is not so easy. You can also use all your digital Assets including Dynamics.
Of course at first glance Houdini FX seems expensive. But remember you have unlimited render licenses! Almost all Houdini artist want to so cool FX. It is extremely hard to find even lighters. Character animation i Houdini? Good luck to find an animator who can animate in Houdini. Unlimited Mantra rendering. But, it is slow.
Paying VRay is cheaper if you consider overall cost. Also to do the proper rendering, you usually need to bake geo and generaite IFD before render which requires engine license.
You pay updrade every few years. YOu also make it lokke it I have to eveysingle plugins. BTW, you don;t need realflow anynore. Just to confirm, update 3 also includes the stuff from update 2 and 1, correct?

Max is there and every service pack for every other version but no Max I know I only need the most recent one, but they should all be there.
I checked with some people who manage the releases and there is indeed a known issue with the updates being displayed right now on manage. I'll update this post as soon as I hear that it's back up. For the time being, I would recommend trying the Autodesk Desktop App - at least for me the update still seems to be accessible there. I was an maintenance plan user for many years but I had to resign. But still during the period of validity of my maintenance plan when it was still active, after I have upgraded to 3ds max I had no access to service packs. It was in time when already 2 service packs was released.
